Today is International Day of the World's Indigenous People. Established in December 1994 by the United Nations General Assembly, this year focuses on COVID-19 and indigenous peoples' resilience. Indigenous communities worldwide already face many challenges like poor access to healthcare and lack of access to essential services, and the unfortunate fact is that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are making these challenges even worse. This year, the Secretariat of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues/DISD/DESA has organized a virtual commemoration and interactive panel discussion on the innovative ways indigenous peoples continue demonstrating resilience and strength in the face of the pandemic while confronting grave threats to their survival.
| | | This panel will take place tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. MT. The primary goal is to highlight how the preservation and promotion of indigenous peoples' traditional knowledge and practices can be leveraged more fully during this pandemic and build back stronger. We hope that you'll tune in.
