While their sister sub-region (Margaret River) is more akin in climate and soil-type to Bordeaux, these two sub-regions are most akin to Burgundy and produce high-quality wines from the same grape varieties that this region is famed for, notably Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Focussing on small quantity but high-quality producers seems to be the hallmark of this beautiful part of our state, so we thought we'd follow suit. Picardy Wines (Pemberton, est 1993) – Established by the iconic Bill and Sandra Pannell (founders of Moss Wood in Margaret River) and now run day-to-day by one of their two talented winemaking sons, Dan, this is a producer with unparalleled experience and a commitment to quality bordering on the obsessive! The lengths gone to in tending the vineyard with, for example, many French clones of Chardonnay & Pinot Noir planted which previously didn't exist in Australia, shows attention to detail which is obvious to anyone tasting Picardy wines. The Pannells have been very deliberate in their choice of sub-region and property to plant, winery design and oak barrels used for Picardy. This, combined with their vast experience and "hands-on" approach, produce wines that are true modern classics. Chateau June-Jerome (Manjimup, est 1997) – Although a relative newcomer as producers, Clint and Mel knew a good thing when they saw a deserted, but well planted 30-year-old vineyard in a great location. Needless to say, they are now the owners of this vineyard and have "dedicated the last 5 years in rehabilitating their precious vines, in order to bring them back to their former days of glory." Recognising a truly great place to produce excellent wine, they aim to produce with minimal impact and biological practices, allowing nature to take its course, showing maximum influence over their vines. The wines that result from this philosophy really live up to their high aspirations. Below & Above (Pemberton, est 2013) – John and Kia Klepec hit the ground running when they took charge of a Pemberton vineyard with a noteworthy 20 years of history under its belt. Wishing to maximise their opportunity to produce high-quality wines from the "complex and specific interaction of environmental conditions" in that vineyard, they have teamed up with highly reputed winemaker Bruce Dukes. Among other things, this was shown when their Pinot Noir took out the People's Choice Award at Pinot Palooza Perth and Singapore in 2018. |
