Cigar Journal Trophy Awards Winners Announced |
"Cigar award" season has officially begun. |
The first cigar awards of the year are in the books, courtesy of Cigar Journal magazine's Cigar Trophy Awards, handed out September 18th. |
Something refreshingly different: The Trophy Awards are selected by popular vote, submitted by readers. So while we're all used to Top 25s, 10s and 20 lists (Cigar Journal does a Top 25 in December, too), this is where the magazine solicits 2 rounds of reader votes: first to determine the shortlist of nominees, then to pick the winners from categories such as... |
• BEST BRAND (by origin) • BEST CIGAR (by origin) • BEST VALUE (by origin) • BEST ACCESSORY |
As you might expect, brands with strong social media buzz – and followers – made it a horse race. "Around 150,000 votes were submitted in these 12 days," said Reinhold Widmayer, Cigar Journal's publisher. "It was all the more exciting to watch the race for the coveted voices every day." |
"We will cool the champagne in time." |
CJ's awards ceremony is normally held during the InterTabac trade show in Germany, and they were planning for a big one: this would have been Cigar Journal's 20th year handing out their consumer choice awards. But since this year's trade show was cancelled (Covid-19 travel restrictions), so was the awards dinner - and the awards were handed out via ZOOM instead. |
Now, you could go to the website and see who got the rest of the Journal's readers votes – or, you could embrace the anticipation and wait for our annual round up of the Trophy Award winners coming next week. If you absolutely can't help yourself, we'll at least say that Perdomo won "Best Cigar – Nicaragua" for the exact cigar Gary was #nowsmoking with Nick (watch it here): |
Extra must-smoke cigar recommendations from September's CA Reports |
The pursuit of after-dinner happiness often includes a cigar and a drink...but a question arises: Does my cigar have to be a pricey primo? Of course not – but it should be a satisfying one. If you're inclined to make a post-meal smoke your regular ritual, Gary has rattled off 10 picks in this month's guide, but could have easily named more – like...

We love to light up while we're golfing, fishing, and even when we're driving. But camping with great cigars? That's in tents.

Jared has 9 top picks for tins, packs, bundles and boxes for your backpack, trunk or RV that will make you one with the great outdoors – and are certainly more satisfying than a fistful of trail mix. Here's an extra:

A Padron for less than $4 a stick. Yes, they're small, but when you're roughing it, space and size matters. That's why we recommend bringing a tin or two along for some Padron 'coffee and cocoa' in a trail-friendly package.

Get ready for winter by giving your cigars and your humidifying device a freshness check.
|
We got our first frost this week here at Famous...and now that the season is changing, now's a pretty good time to give your humidor a once-over. If your cigars feel dry, it might be time to recharge your humidifier - it also might be time to decide whether to replace or upgrade your gear. Watch now to see three of the most popular humidifiers, explained – oasis foam, PG crystals, and Boveda – plus when and how to refill them. |
You love cigars. You love music. Put 'em together, and you've got the Advisors' Playlist. Here's a sneak peek of one of our songs to smoke with... |
Track 56: "Black Magic Woman" - Fleetwood Mac |
Cigar Smoked While Listening: Sobremesa Brulee |
Why They Pair Well: It wasn't one of today's Connecticuts "with attitude" as I so often call them, but one that winds the clock back with a classic, chilled-out vibe. It's just as smooth as the song's bluesy mood and as naturally sweet as a cigar can get. READ MORE |

AJF Shadow King & Old Fashioned
|
The Old Fashioned is a storied libation - it's one of the most popular cocktails in the United States. And with AJ Fernandez making some best-in-class Nicaraguan cigars, you can put 'em together for a glorious cigar pairing that's rich in flavor, loaded with subtle nuances, and deceptively smooth.
|
Here's how we make an Old Fashioned…
|
• ½ packet of raw sugar • 1 Maraschino cherry • 2 orange slices • 3 dashes of Peychaud's bitters • ¼ ounce of club soda • 2 ounces of Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey • 1 scoop of ice (oversized cubes are best)
Start by putting the half packet of sugar (or use a sugar cube, your call) in a rocks glass. Add the cherry, orange slices and 3 dashes of bitters, then splash in the club soda and muddle it all together. Add the Woodford Reserve, then top up the glass with ice. Sip and enjoy.

Smoke This With It: Shadow King by AJ Fernandez
|
Shadow King sounds pretty robust on paper: a vigorous mix of Nicaraguan, Honduran, and Dominican long fillers, coupled with a subtly-sweet San Andres binder and finished in a very dark Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro wrapper leaf. Smoking it is proof, evidenced by the tasting notes: earth, spice, espresso, cocoa, cedar, leather, citrus and black pepper.
|
Those play well with the Woodford's flavors: dried fruit, cocoa and tobacco spice are present on the nose, while spice, fruit & floral flavors splash across the taste buds with a long and silky-smooth finish.
